LA TERMINOLOGÍA BUDISTA Y LA EVANGELIZACIÓN EN JAPÓN

Compendio
CHRISTIAN
EVANGELIZATION IN BUDDHIST TERMINOLOGY
―An examination of the dilemmas of Jesuit
missionaries using Japanese terminology as seen in “Fidesu no Qvio” chapter
twenty-nine—

Abstract
During Xavier’s early days in Japan, the Jesuits missioners decided to
refrain from extracting Buddhist nomenclatures for fear of misunderstanding in
their Christian texts. This paper focuses on chapter twenty-nine of the book
“Fidesu no Qvio”, introduced in the sixteenth century following the decision of
set pragmatic adjustments to Buddhist terms. However, the chapter also contains
numerous expressions classified as “heathen terms“or “Buddhist context”.
Moreover, it uses many expressions that are reminiscent of Buddhist sutra
citations. The goal of this project is
to show the implication and the dilemma of the Japanese missioners along the
interpretation of the Christian beliefs using Japanese and Buddhist concepts.
This has been done by examining the original text of the book in
Spanish and the Japanese-Portuguese dictionary “Nippojisho“, which was used as
Japanese study material by the Jesuits.
Upon examination of those facts, this research highlights one part
of the Japanese believers’ or new Jesuits’ attempt to use Buddhist expressions
in Christian texts in order to evangelize other Japanese people due to their
natural affinity with Japanese culture.
